Irene Ochem is the Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Africa Women Innovation and Entrepreneurship Forum (AWIEF). She leads the strategic management of AWIEF and its external relations and oversees the implementation of all its activities and programmes. Irene’s passion for female innovation, technology and entrepreneurship coupled to her strong belief that Africa’s transformation is possible and can be achieved through enhanced economic empowerment, participation and leadership for its women and girls led her to found AWIEF in 2014.

Irene is an Entrepreneur and an International Development Specialist with international experience of over 25 years working in Europe and Africa. She is Owner and Managing Director of ICO Conferences & Events Limited, an international professional conference planning, production and event management company based in South Africa and Nigeria.

Irene spent decades working for international organisations including United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) and as International Consultant for United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA). She worked two years as Research Administration Manager for University of Cape Town.

Irene holds Bachelor and post-graduate degrees from University of Nigeria, Nsukka (Nigeria), University of Trieste (Italy) and an MBA from University of London (UK). Other post-graduate qualifications are in Project Management, Gender and Trade-related issues. She writes, speaks and participates widely in international meetings on women and gender.

Zainab Saleh heads various organizations as the Managing Director as well as the Marketing Director of File Right Limited. She is also currently the Managing Director of Brains and Hammers Facility Management Limited and the Executive Director, Operations, Check Inn Hotels.

She holds a Bachelor of Arts and a Bachelor of Science from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Kaduna State as well as other certification for other professional courses attended.

Zainab has over eighteen years working experience in general administration, operations/logistics, business development/consultancy, and documents (records) management from various industries such as the Oil and Gas, Telecommunications, Legal, Pharmaceutical, Real Estate and Construction, giving her a wealth of experience in these fields and thus, the mantel of leadership in the organizations she runs. She also sits on the board of other organizations as an Executive Director.

Zainab has always had a passion for sports. She is an avid karateka and squash player. Her dedication and experience for the sport of karate has yielded her the position of Lagos State Technical Director for Karate. She is a recognized continental referee and was also the Chairperson Women’s Affairs Commission, Union African Karate Federation (UFAK) and at a point in time, a member of the Technical Committee for the Karate Federation of Nigeria.

She has contributed immensely to the advancement of the sport in Nigeria, and has encouraged and promoted active participation of women in the sport. She single handedly organized a successful female international open karate championship that was well recognized. She is a role model to other female karatekas, and her accomplishments have not gone unnoticed by them.

At various times, she has served as the Assistant General Secretary, and Squash Captain of the Lagos Lawn Tennis Club.

Lungi Morrison

Ms Lungi Morrison is a humanitarian by nature, a social development strategist and communications executive whose depth of experience and skills enables her to traverse both commercial, social and public service development landscapes.


Lungi has lived, studied and worked in a number of different countries, including among them Nigeria, Zimbabwe, Brazil, the UK (including time in Norway), New Zealand and parts of the United States of America. As such, Lungi’s ability to adapt to different cultures means she is not only multi-lingual but also, predisposed to adapting to diverse human experiences.


Post-apartheid, in 2008, Lungi participated in the development and implementation of HIV/AIDS awareness programs, education initiatives and brand development programs tantamount to South Africa’s transformation agenda. Not only did she participate in these but she also worked with the Henry Kaiser Family Foundation (based in Silicon Valley San Francisco) and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation who supported the roll out of innovative youth initiatives like loveLife which engaged the United Nations youth agenda and key local and global media which included MTV.


Apart from the social programs, Lungi has also participated in the retail space where she worked with renowned brands that include Nestle, Coca Cola, Gucci, and Levis. Her experience in the retail industry enabled her to work as consultant with the then pioneering African fashion brand, Stoned Cherrie, founded by Nkensani Nkosi. Stoned Cherrie was at the time among the only authentically African fashion and design houses championing South Africa’s pre-millennial fashion revolution.


In 2010 Lungi worked for global African sponsor of the FIFA 2010 World Cup, African telecommunications giant MTN. Her roles included managing multi-pronged stakeholder portfolios, which included liaising with South Africa’s Department of International Relations and Coordination (DIRCO), Foreign Affairs. She interacted directly with Ambassadors and Ministers in markets where MTN has a footprint; Cameroon, Nigeria, Ghana as well as working with the Local Organizing Committee in Johannesburg. Leading up to, during and post the Soccer World Cup, Lungi also informed strategic delivery of MTN’s CSR Legacy initiative - 1Goal, United Against Malaria (FIFA World Cup Education Legacy Campaign, engaging local and global campaign ambassadors including artist Kelly Rowland and a few football stars). Lungi also facilitated partnerships between MTN and African Leadership Academy founded by Fred Swaniker and Acha Leke (based in Johannesburg).


In 2014 Lungi participated in the executive development summer program at Harvard University graduate school Boston Massachusetts, studying Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and Emerging markets (BRICS). She has served and interacted with global leaders including, Gordon Brown, Malala Yusuf, Sir Richard Branson, Strive Masiyiwa, ex-President Thabo Mbeki, Nelson Mandela and Graca Machel.


Seeking to consolidate her multi-disciplinary experience that spans two decades, Lungi established an e-commerce business, Onibespoke (www.onibespoke.com) in 2016. This is a contemporary lifestyle brand, which curates African designs specifically, interior décor, accessories and art. ‘Oni’, is a Yoruba word meaning ‘source’.


As a keen Pan-Africanist, Lungi believes that art is a fundamental driver of Africa’s ‘new economy’ and narrative. Through her new brand, Lungi seeks to unearth the ‘gems’ inherent to Africa’s heritage, their provenance, indigenous knowledge, legacy and ingenuity. She believes, as an African woman, it is important to take ownership of how Africa’s creative industry is marketed and ‘sold’ in key markets that include the UK, Scandinavia, the United States and Asia.


Lungi is a global citizen, mother, and eco-warrior, who passionately applies her social development, ethnographic, communications and brand strategy skills in inspiring and connecting people everywhere to their devine spark - the beauty that makes each of us a ‘creative-alchemist’.


Vuyisa Qabaka

Marketing Partner at Entrepreneur Traction (South Africa)

It’s no secret that women have historically faced greater barriers then men when it comes to fully participating in the economy.

Vuyisa, who has an extremely impressive list of accomplishments and titles where he has been, or still is instrumental in bringing positive impact to good business for good. His support and role as a Strategic Advisor for AWIEF on the 2017 Advisory Council, is a very real example of “He for She”, where strong influential men support the advancement of women as equals.

Not only is he a Tech and Small Business Advisor, but he is also a Host / Presenter for Business Beat at Cape Town TV, a Writer / Contributor for Business Report and a popular Speaker for Business/ Entrepreneurship and African tech startup.

VUYISA QABAKA is a lean start-up practitioner and partner at venture builder, Entrepreneur Traction. He holds directorships on various start-up boards, and a non- executive director seat at the South African Black Entrepreneurs Forum (SABEF).

Past projects have included setting up creative business strategies and innovation spaces, as well as consulting at executive committee level, with a focus bringing disruptive market positioning, offbeat social impact initiative and ecosystem development. Being involved with numerous companies and projects over the years, Vuyisa has built up extensive experience in corporate communications, business innovation, business development and marketing. His journey into entrepreneurship already started as a 2nd year student when he was involved with launching a student magazine and the Afriquezeen restaurant at UCT Upper Campus.

Vu or “Chief”, as he is known in business circles, currently consults in marketing and communications for the ICT industry in the Western Cape and gives back through various social impact initiative, such as Impact Mzansi, Open Design Festival, Purple Cow Ventures and the Farm Mzansi cooperative.

He has completed a Bachelor of Commerce (BComm) Degree and a Postgraduate Certificate in Property Analysis at the University of Cape Town and a Design Thinking in Practice short course from the D-School, at the UCT Business School. Vuyisa is currently studying towards a Certificate in Digital Money through Digital Frontiers.

Vuyisa is a regular tech media contributor and has a weekly column in the Business Report, part of the Independent Media Group and the largest English language business publication in South Africa. He also writes a blog on the township economy called Kasi Economics (read more at www.kasieconomics.com) and mentors start-ups in various townships for the Kasi2Kasi initiative. But his media talents extend further than just writing. He is the television host/presenter of Business Beat on Cape Town TV (DSTV Channel 263).
