Cape Craft and Design Institute
Erica Elk is the executive director of the Cape Craft & Design Institute NPC (CCDI), which she was appointed to establish in November 2001, following a provincial government research study into the needs of the craft and design sector. A visual artist by training, she has, in her professional career, worked as a writer, designer and strategic project manager across a range of platforms in the arts, culture and development arena.
From two people and a database of 63 craft producers, the CCDI now has a core staff of 45 and a database of 17 886 people who benefit from information on the activities of the CCDI. From this database, in the last financial year, 3825 creative enterprises made use of CCDI services which include business, product, market and design support. The CCDI now operates nationwide across several provinces – it is the leading sector development agency in South Africa, mandated to support the flourishing creative sector.
Erica is a combination of practitioner, implementer and strategist and plays an active role in formulating strategy and policy for the creative industries regionally and nationally.
