Minister of Civic Education, Culture & Community Development
Hon. Cecilia Chazama, M.P. is Malawi’s Minister of Civic Education, Culture and Community Development. She was born on 22nd November, 1968 and hails from Lunzu in Blantyre District. Prior to the above current position, Hon. Chazama held portfolios of Chairperson of Women’s Parliamentary Caucus. Hon. Chazama has also previously served as the First Vice President of Pan African Women Caucus, Committee of Cooperation, International Relations and Conflict Resolutions at Pan African Parliament. She also served at the SADC Regional Women’s Caucus and was instrumental in pushing for various reforms including rationalization of procedures for electing executive members. Hon. Chazama joined politics in 2004 and was elected as a Member of Parliament for Blantyre North Constituency in 2009 and was appointed Deputy Secretary General of the Ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP). Hon. Chazama was re-elected as a Member of Parliament in 2014 and continued to serve in various parliamentary committees including Budget and Finance and Legal Affairs before being appointed as a Cabinet Minister.
Hon. Chazama holds a Diploma in Secretarial Studies and has worked in various high profile organizations as an Administrator including World Health Organization (WHO).
She is a mother of four children and supports scores of extended family members. Her passion is working with the rural people especially women, the elderly and the youth and she is supporting them with small scale business programmes aimed at alleviating poverty.
